Are we the only ones hankering for fashion season? Looking back at the February season of The Daily, we found a small gem from the February 13, 2009 issue that’s worth revisiting. Behold our interview with Portfolio editrix Joanne Lipman, conducted several days before at an event in New York.
So, Joanne. What are you wearing?
Are you really asking me that? No one has ever asked me that question. I think I’m wearing a Chanel skirt and a wool turtleneck.
Conde is in turmoil. How are you keeping your magazine above the fray?
It’s a really exciting time for us at Portfolio. [The recession] is the story of our time. We’re extremely energized. We really feel that the kind of reporting we are doing is important to help people understand what’s going on.
How do you balance the negative and positive stories?
The DNA of Portfolio is to be counterintuitive. That means that in our first 18 months, we did an excellent job at staying ahead of the curve and we were very early in our reporting of some of the major financial issues that blew up. In our first issue, we wrote about credit default swaps and how they were potentially the $300 trillion time bomb. This was at a time when the market was at its peak. Now that the entire economy is in a recession, we’re trying to look ahead at the signs that will lead us out. We don’t want to get caught in that downward spiral. So much of what’s happening now is psychological.
On an apparel note, you featured Dov Charney on your November cover as the Dow was plummeting. How was that relevant?
Well, he was a good story and they were a good company. That was an issue of timing. It wasn’t like the crash happened and then we put him on the cover. The crash happened and we put Michael Lewis on the cover with the end of Wall Street. That’s monthly timing for you. But it was an interesting story and the apparel and retail industry continues to be a very interesting topic for us.
Why must chic go on?
Oh God, I’m certainly not the chic expert. I’m probably not the best person to ask about fashion.
