We Wish We All Could Be California Girls…

We have surf envy here at Chic Report, so when we hit up Roxy’s book launch of Surf Girl Roxy at the Openhouse Gallery on Mulberry Street last night, we were sort of jealous. Not only because the surfing in New York is less than ideal–don’t hate us, Montaukians–but because photographs by the likes of Dewey Nicks (one of the evening’s hosts) forced us to do some serious California dreaming. (We need a vacation.)
The images in Surf Girl Roxy feature surf champions both on land and at sea, looking so chic that we’re almost inspired to wear Roxy board shorts to work. “The magic is a combination of Dewey’s fashion photography with the serious athleticism captured by surf photographers,” said Randy Hild, executive vice president of Roxy Global Marketing. ”What better representation of Roxy?” Nicks rhapsodized on his first photo shoot with the brand in the nineties. ”The models were all supplied by Roxy, so I was overwhelmed by how athletic everyone was,” he said. “There was nothing I’d ask these women to do that they weren’t up for. For me, it was an instant love connection.” Co-host and surf fiend Joy Bryant recalled the first time she surfted on vacation in Mexico in 2006. “I was dating a hot surfer, and I don’t really swim, so he taught me to surf! From there, I went on–but I still don’t know how to swim.” Joy, we’ll teach you–if you’ll give us surfing lessons in Montauk.
