Wunderkind’s Wolfgang Joop is one of our truly favorite designers to interview. After showcasing his spring collection inspired by Japanese great Isamu Noguchi’s travels to America, he spoke to Chic Report about the collection.
How important is art in your life?
It’s very important in my life, but it was not my inspiration. I just set out to do what was important to me. You know I belong to a generation that didn’t need to schlep around a fancy bag to get noticed. You used to be able to get through the airport security without spending hours and hours at detectors. I’m also from Prussia, so I set out to create something very precise. As my first and second ideas elevated, it reminded me of a Naguchi table. I didn’t just want to create a fashion installation. That simply bores me. The fashion designer approach is much more approachable. My point is that one has to create art that’s totally out of competition. So, don’t be alike, but be yourself.
